The Kanchana Chitra Ramayana (c. 1814) was the most opulent Ramayana ever created - its name, Kanchana (meaning “golden”), came from the lavish gold embellishments that adorned its 550 paintings. Commissioned by Raja Udit Narayan of Banaras, this masterpiece remained hidden in the Banaras court for nearly two centuries, a treasure only a privileged few ever saw. But in the 21st century, the British discovered it, auctioning it off page by page.
Now, its lost grandeur is reimagined on this finely engraved wooden bowl - a tribute to a masterpiece that once was, now preserved in art.
