Arpita Singh (b.1937), born in Baranagar, West Bengal is one of the key artists in Indian Modernism and a celebrated painter. Singh completed a Diploma in Fine Art at the Delhi Polytechnic College in 1959 and later pursued textile design at the Weavers' Service Centre in Kolkata. Singh completed a Diploma in Fine Art at the Delhi Polytechnic College in 1959 and later pursued textile design at the Weavers' Service Centre in Kolkata. Her paintings, primarily made with watercolours and oils, investigate the relationship between women and their historical and mythical contexts.
Singh's paintings are a part of the collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Peabody Essex Museum in Massachusetts. She was awarded the Parishad Samman in 1991, the Kalidas Samman in 1998 and the Padma Bhushan in 2011. Singh currently lives and works in New Delhi.
