Meera Mukherjee (1923-1998), born in Kolkata, was a modern Indian artist, known for creating sculptures influenced by traditional Dhokra sculptures, highlighting everyday life and indigenous practices. Mukherjee started her initial training at the Indian Society of Oriental Art at the age of fourteen. She joined the Government College of Art and Craft i...
Meera Mukherjee (1923-1998), born in Kolkata, was a modern Indian artist, known for creating sculptures influenced by traditional Dhokra sculptures, highlighting everyday life and indigenous practices. Mukherjee started her initial training at the Indian Society of Oriental Art at the age of fourteen. She joined the Government College of Art and Craft in Calcutta (present-day Kolkata) in 1947, completing her Diploma in painting, graphics and sculpture. In 1953, she studied painting at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Munich.
Mukherjee's works have been displayed at various cultural institutions such as the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art in New Delhi, and Chatterjee & Lal at 47/A in Mumbai. She received the President's Award for metal craftsmanship in 1968, the Abanindra Prize in 1981 from the Government of West Bengal, and Padma Shri for her contribution in 1992.
